Gerald Hallam Cooke, born in 1889, enlisted with the Indian Army Reserve of Officers and went to East Africa as a volunteer Maxim gunner (Bombay Maxim Gun Company) in September 1914. He was given a Commission in October 1915 and posted to the 130th Baluchis, but seconded as Special Staff Officer to the 2nd Kashmiri Imperial Service Infantry.
